Clayton is the county seat of Rabun County, and its downtown is a few blocks of Main Street and Savannah Street at the old crossroads. Places keep their own hours, so before you pick a day, try the what’s-open planner: it builds a walk from the places open on the day and time you choose.

Main Street and Savannah Street

  • Reeves was founded in Clayton in 1928 by Lewis F. Reeves Sr. and Rubye Dickerson Reeves. It first traded in the Derrick Building on Main Street before moving to the southwest corner of Main and Savannah Streets. The company calls itself the oldest retail store in Rabun County still owned by its founding family. Reeves: Our History
  • Reeves' original downtown store, Reeves Main Street, is at 16 S. Main Street, Clayton. It sells furniture, outdoor and sporting goods, clothing, gifts, housewares, toys and grills, and is open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Sunday. Reeves: Clayton Main Street location page
  • The Works Progress Administration built The Rock House, a meeting place and small park in the center of downtown Clayton. WPA funding also built a gymnasium that is now the Rabun County Civic Center. Rabun County Historical Society: Rabun County, The First 200 Years
  • The Clayton Merchants & Business Association (CMBA) publishes visitclaytonga.net and hosts downtown's annual street events. Its 2026 calendar listed two Block Parties, Ramshackle, Halloween and the December Cookie Crawl, all on Main Street. Clayton Merchants & Business Association: CMBA 2026 Events in Downtown Clayton

Every restaurant with its address and published hours is on the downtown restaurants page, and the shops and galleries are on the shops page.

Waterfalls, lakes and the river

Not sure which fits your day? The outdoor day matcher ranks waterfalls, overlooks and lakes by the time you have, how far you want to walk and whether a dog is coming.

Foxfire

  • Foxfire began in 1966, when a new teacher at the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School and his students started a magazine about mountain heritage. They named it for the glow-in-the-dark fungus found in the local hills. The Foxfire Book followed in 1972 and became a national bestseller. Foxfire: History
  • In 1974 Foxfire students used book royalties to buy land on Black Rock Mountain. Historic buildings were moved there to create the Foxfire Village Museum, which has more than 20 historic log buildings showing Appalachian life from 1820 to 1940, plus a working blacksmith shop.
