Downtown Clayton’s holiday season is short and walkable: a makers’ market on the Civic Center lawn in November, a nighttime parade in early December and a Main Street cookie stroll a week later. Here is the 2026 calendar as the organizers had published it by Oct. 18, 2026, with the gaps marked.

The short answer

  • Of These Mountains Fall MarketPlace: Saturday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., free.
  • Christmas Parade: Saturday, Dec. 5, 6 p.m. The route is not published yet.
  • Cookie Crawl: Saturday, Dec. 12, 5 to 7 p.m. on Main Street.
  • Christmas candle lighting: not announced.

When is the 2026 Clayton Christmas Parade?

Saturday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. in downtown Clayton, according to the City’s save-the-date post of Oct. 13, 2026. This year’s theme salutes America’s 250th: an early-American Christmas honoring the Founding Fathers, with strings of popcorn, paper chains, cranberry garland, and fife and drum. Groups can enter a float through Nov. 30, with applications online or at City Hall, 837 Highway 76 West. For details call (706) 782-4512 or email info@cityofclaytonga.gov.

It starts a little later than last year. The 2025 parade was on Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m., with a Christmas-movies theme, and was co-hosted by the City and the Rabun County Chamber of Commerce. The 2026 post names only the City.

Two groups run downtown’s holiday season. The City hosts the parade. The Clayton Merchants & Business Association, which publishes visitclaytonga.net, runs downtown’s annual street events on Main Street, including the Cookie Crawl and the Halloween parade and trick-or-treating on Oct. 31.

What is the parade route, and where do I park?

Neither is published yet. The City’s 2026 post gives no route, no street-closure times and no parking plan, so ask City Hall closer to the date. The City has no year-round downtown parking page either. For its last big street event, Ramshackle in June 2026, it asked visitors on its live feed to follow the signs and arrows to public parking areas and not to park on the street, on sidewalks or next to no-parking signs. Our parking page has what the City has published.

What is the giant candle downtown?

Clayton’s Christmas candle. The original hung at the main downtown intersection every holiday season until 1987, when a change to the traffic signal ended the practice, The Clayton Tribune reported in 2022. A replica, 18 to 19 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds, came back that year.

In 2023 the candle was lit right after the nighttime parade, per the Tribune. For 2026, no lighting has been announced, and the City’s parade post does not mention one. If it follows the 2023 pattern, it would be parade night, but that is a guess until the City says so.

What is the Cookie Crawl?

An evening holiday stroll on Main Street. Participating downtown businesses hand out treats while shoppers browse. In 2026 it is Saturday, Dec. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m., on the Clayton Merchants & Business Association’s calendar. The CMBA has not published which shops are taking part. Our shops and restaurants pages list who is downtown and when they open.

Families should know about a clash. Tallulah Gorge State Park runs a Sunset Candy Cane Hunt the same evening, 5 to 7 p.m., with a holiday movie, s’mores and hot chocolate. Sign-up is through the park office, and the park parking fee applies.

Where can I shop for the holidays?

  • Of These Mountains Fall MarketPlace, Saturday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the Rabun County Civic Center lawn and pavilions at 201 W Savannah St. More than 100 artisans, makers, vendors and small businesses, and free admission, per the organizer. The Civic Center is downtown, within easy walking distance of many restaurants and stores, so the market pairs well with Main Street.
  • The Northeast Georgia Arts Tour, Nov. 6-8, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is a self-guided tour of studios and galleries in six mountain counties, including Rabun, per the tour’s site. You can start anywhere and plot your own route from its downloadable brochure. Some venues keep seasonal hours, so call ahead.
  • Make your own ornaments at Foxfire on Saturday, Nov. 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: a mini poplar-bark basket class for $80, on Foxfire’s calendar.

What else is on around Clayton for the holidays?

Parade day can be a full day. Tallulah Gorge State Park holds Christmas at the Gorge from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 5, with crafts, Christmas music, Santa, a snack and a hayride. The park parking fee applies. It is in Tallulah Falls, south of town, which leaves time to get back for the 6 p.m. parade.

The park also runs a ranger-led Black Friday hike on the 1.5-mile Inspiration Loop Trail, 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 27, and a full moon hike to the suspension bridge on Dec. 23, per its event calendar. One practical note: the Rabun County Library in Clayton is closed Nov. 26-28 and Dec. 24-26.
